The kids with their piano teacher on Christmas Day
The kids with their piano teacher on Christmas Day

Two weeks have gone by since sitting down to write a weekly post. I managed to catch a rather nasty head cold just before the end of the year. Headaches every day, congestion, sinus infection, and feeling like my face had been unkindly smashed with a wooded board. I spent most of New Year’s Day in bed and have very gradually improved since then.

Unfortunately I do not have many pictures from the past two weeks. Right after Christmas we went to Buffalo Trace to see their Christmas light display. I did not get a good picture of the buffalo jumping over the road but hopefully I can get a better shot next year. The sky turned out a deep blue in the pictures; I also liked the bourbon themed displays at the distillery. Next year we hope to see the cave lights in Louisville.

Shannon and the kids went to see Rouge One. They thought the movie was excellent but were sad to learn that Carrie Fished died the same day. We all were and I guess most of the country too. I thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world when I was a little girl. Littlest and I went shopping while they were at the movies. We were in desperate need of groceries since all of the Christmas leftovers were gone. Littlest read nearly everything at the store to me. I knew he was beginning to read but I had not expected him to read so well. When we got home I gave him some assessments and  graduated him to first grade. The rest of the day was spent deconstructing Christmas.

During the break I also did assessments for the rest of the crew and ordered some new curriculum based on their results. The new books will arrive this week sometime. Schooling was a part-time endeavor last week. I was still feeling quite horrible so we skipped read aloud time. Thursday was the first snow of the year so I gave the kids the day off from schooling since it is our tradition. I was glad the first snow day was during the week I was so sick. They played outside with their friends. On Friday their friends were a little surprised that my crew did not get the day off from school. I felt kinda mean sending sad little faces away. While I was shutting the door the little girl was proclaiming, “But it is a snow day!”

We watched several movies over the past few weeks: Star Trek Beyond, Rear Window, The Dirty Dozen, nearly the entire Harry Potter series, some I cannot remember and the new Sherlock

episode. I do most of my knitting while the TV is on so I’ve kept up with the temperature blanket so far and nearly have a blanket complete for a little niece.

Today I went shopping for an outfit for a job interview. I had no clothing that I would consider business casual. Sparkles went shopping with me and helped me choose from the options. I modeled a few outfits for her and she chose the one I bought. The job is only part-time in the evenings and will not cut into homeschooling hours. I have not worked outside of the home in many years. The interview is tomorrow…
